Anyway,we touched down at about 9Am and it took us another hour to get to the marriage hall which was only 10kms from the airport(another feature of Bombay!).We were all excited as it was always more of a get together rather than a formal occasion when it comes to events in my family.
We got settled in at about 11Am.What next??Yes you guessed it right..........My other cousin Sriram(name is ironical to his deeds!), my uncle(who I dearly love) and myself decided to treat ourselves to some liquid diet(another fancy name for liquor).
As always my uncle was prepared with his scotch from the Middle east and we were all set to take that first sip. It's funny every time you take the first sip it feels as if you have achieved something in your life..............maybe a battle that you have won and sipping it as the fat lady dances!!Anyway, just when we were gonna sip the drink my cousin shouted asking us to stop! This amazed us as he is normally the one pushing us to gulp the drink! Then came the bad news.He said that he doesn't drink scotch anymore and only has White Rum and the worse news of them all................We didn't have any rum on us and we had to go hunt for it in Bombay. It is a principle that we always drink together when we meet and my uncle and self had to wait till we found something for him. What a pity!!
The 3 musketeers set out in search of a bar in Varshi (a suburb in Bombay), none of us knowing which way we were heading! We asked all the rickshaw - wallas, the taxi drivers and kept walking for about 1/2 an hour. By this time I was loosing patience as one of the hard things to do in life is to go looking for something that you already have!!Doesn't make much sense does it?!!
I started shouting and calling my cousin by names.............I will not use unparliamentary words here.Another left, another right, through a lane, back to the main road, one more left and Lo and Behold!there it was..........THE GOLDEN PUNJAB(bar)!!What a name...........we thought............but hey 'A rose with any other name would smell as sweet' right??
We went right in.......to the first floor.............by this time we were dripping with sweat in the Bombay heat and the a/c bar was a warm or should I say a cold welcome. We had promised our family that we will return to the marriage hall within an hour but we lost half an hour already and in the next half hour we had to gulp as many drinks as possible and return.Jeez........what a mission!
Finally, the drinks arrived and just when I was about to take my first sip I got a call from my aunt who was a bit concerned of our whereabouts(Mainly because she knew where we will be!!). She started blasting the hell out on the phone asking us to return immediately and then gave the phone to my dad. Just when I thought that I was going to get a good hearing from him he said, "How dare you leave me here in this boring gang and go to the bar alone?". I burst out laughing but I knew that we didn't have much time to have another drink and we had to leave after the first one. We cleared the cheque and while I was doing that I got a message from my dad saying that he had found another bar much closer to the marriage hall and he was there along with my other uncle's.What luck we thought as we had to walk back all the way..........................
We came downstairs and to our amazement we saw the GANG...............all my uncles and my dad sipping their beer!!No prizes for guessing what happened next.Yes, you are right. We sat next to them and had a great afternoon drinking. We went back to the marriage hall about an hour late.........got a good hearing as we went in.If you ask me if it was all worth it................I will say maybe NOT.................but who said that I am not allowed to lie here!!
